Most modern psychologists accept the socio-cognitive model of hypnosis and that hyper-suggestability is it's modus operandi.

However to assume that this means that deception is involved is incorrect. Indeed Professor Irving Kirsch (who published the widely reported study on SSRI anti-depressants being no more effective than placebo) is a leading expert on placebo, expectancy and hypnosis. He has called hypnosis "a non-deceptive placebo".

I'm a hypnotherapist and I tell my clients that this is a direct, non-deceptive use of the placebo effect. I tell them that I will use certain techniques to convince them that they are going into "a powerful state" - but that this is simply to increase their expectancy of positive results.

I have excellent results and clients are very receptive.

I must point out that Derren Brown is also a faker, he tells some outrageous lies about his methods and Channel 4 was forced to remove his ridiculous Mind Control piece from the science section of their website.
Read this article by the mathematician and journalist Simon Singh: http://www.simonsingh.net/Derren_Brown_Article.html

I've nearly finished 'Tricks of the Mind' and it is very good. His personal history is quite interesting and he's got a great writing style. Though I'm going to have to re-read it in order to nail some of the memory tricks he describes. I can't remember how to do them!
