This is very good news, but I think Mr Burman should state his reasons for resignation - for the record.
Given his previous robust defence of Ofquack on this website one must sadly conclude the sole reason is the 'conflict of interest' from the organisation and its members who pay his salary.

Rather than recognition that although one can 'regulate' virtually any aspect of society, when it comes to public health issues more than a modicum of knowledge is needed by those professing to be 'fit for regulation' - and also by those chosen to confer regulation.

You can't regulate alternative health as by its very nature practitioners can't - or won't - justify their practice in relation to conventional standards.

Regulation gives a false veneer of professional respectability, which is only afforded the 13 'allied health professionals' (www.hpc-uk.org)after an extensive period of study (full time, usually at least 3 years) and clinical scrutiny by experienced professionals.

It would be time and money well spent in setting up an easily accessible medico-legal organisation for the public harmed by these amateurs-who-lack-insight, rather than pursue the dreams of a deluded prince and his lackeys.
This would give easier access to the public claiming financial compensation for their injuries.
Ofquack is nothing more than a shell organisation, responsible for cutting out 'striking dodgy practitioners from the register' -that is assuming of course that they are on it in the first place.

A shambles all round, really

interestingly at least one registered dietitian is now marketing herself as a Nutritional Therapist in local press because she feels (I asked her...) that it's a more recognisable term for consumers. This could have several effects; It may begin to re-legitimise a term that is currently beign discredited - it may further remove the term dietitian from mainstream use - it may encourage cumsumers to investigate their Nutrition Therapist's qualifications - it may lead to a 'protected title' status fot the titles Nutrition Therapist and Nutritionist which are currently unprotected.

As the anonymous coward that commented on the original Barbara Nash blog with the news that Andy Burman was working with the CNHC - it fills me with satisfaction to know that the Dietitians themselves were every bit as mad about this as supporters of evidence based medicine everywhere were. It was in fact only ever the leadership that were so horribly out of touch.

Massive respect to the Dietitians to enabling this necessary move - it is just a shame Mr Burman himself could not see the folly his position without the gentle persuasion of the blogosphere and the dietitians themselves.

Whilst one must still hold grave reservations about someone who would make such a decision in the first place, hopefully now this will herald a new era of the BDA supporting their members and restoring Dietitians as the single point of contact for all evidence based nutritional information and advice.

Another good day for evidence based medicine - there have been a few recently. Top work Andy and everyone else who kicked up a stink.

Well, they do have a woman who appears to believe that reflexology foot massages can relieve constipation. I wonder if they wear protective clothing for that massage?
